With offices and business opening up after a long time closed you might find new residents moved in – RATS. We are getting calls this week from business owners how find that they have evidence of rodents in their building. When it comes to rodent infestations, time is of the essence. In addition to being highly intrusive, rodents also breed at a rapid pace, making their behaviour all the more destructive. This is how you know they are around –
Rodent Droppings
Rodent droppings let you know that a rat was there. If you’re seeing rodent droppings in multiple places around your building, this is a good indication that you have a number of them running around. Droppings can be found anywhere, but some of the more common places include along baseboards, under appliances, and in food storage areas and cabinets.
Strange Noises
One mouse isn’t going to cause noises in the office, but many will. Rats are nocturnal creatures, so pay attention to activity at all times. You may hear moving, scratching or squeaking in your walls as the rats run around. If you’re observant you may notice a nose or two peeking out and running across your floor.
Damage
They are commonly responsible for causing damage to property and can destroy metal or plastic pipes, wooden beams and joists and, sometimes, soft concrete. They're also able to easily chew through the plastic coatings on electrical wiring, which could lead to short circuits in computers or even fires.
Stale Odours
Rats smell. Once urine and faeces build up, musky odours follow. Rats also build nests and reproduce, and all of this smells, too. Usually, it’s not faeces and urine on their own that smell but rather the combination of faeces, urine, and nest material. Enclosed areas, such as cabinets and small rooms, may smell like ammonia from the urine. If fresh air and fans aren’t getting rid of the odours, a rat infestation could be to blame.
Structural Damage
Mice, rats and other rodents do not discriminate when it comes to where they will build their nests or homes. Walls, attics, and insulated areas are common spaces rodents like to invade and make their own. In some cases, the disturbances caused by rodents can actually cause structural damage or create entry points for more pests to enter the structure. As qualified pest professionals we understand the importance of preventing such occurrences and will regularly look out for signs of entry or infestation when we visit a building.
If you’re notice signs of activity in your business there’s a strong possibility that you have an infestation. It doesn’t take long for this to happen – a few rats can quickly build nests and reproduce. Because they can spread bacteria that is hazardous to human health, it’s important to call a pest control expert right away on 1800377377.
