CHECK YOUR PREMISES FOR PESTS WHEN YOU REOPEN
Many buildings have been empty during Covid. A pipe may have leaked. Bins might not have been cleaned out correctly. Dry goods may have been tampered with. If you discover that rats entered your business please be very careful. Rats causes a number of problems because they are the natural hosts of fleas that may carry bubonic plague, murine typhus or endemic typhus etc. To find how they arrived, look at the world as they do - Gaps, holes or cracks are open doors to them
Rats seek food, water and shelter in places that provide these …. And that might be your business. Many people are unaware that these unwelcome visitors have arrived until they have increased in number, begin damaging property and leave evidence of their existence.
Eastern Pest Control are well aware of the stress and cost this causes – and can lead to closure. We can offer the highest standard and most cost-effective solution available – usually the same day!
DID YOU KNOW
If you occupy a building you have a responsibility to keep your building free from pests. Under existing legislation the control of rodents is the responsibility of the occupier of the premises in which rodent infestation is evident.
It is recommended that:
- Waste food, empty food tins and other waste which might attract rats must be stored in bins with tight fitting lids.
- Food for the birds should not be left in any place where rats can have access to it. Such food is often a greater attraction to rats than to birds.
- Garden compost heaps should not contain anything likely to attract rats.
- The surroundings of your dwelling house must be kept clean, the garden should be free of accumulations of rubbish, hedges should be neatly trimmed and overgrowth of weeds and grass controlled.
In order to prevent infestation of buildings, all outside walls should be rodent-proofed against the entry of rodents. In this regard, attention is directed to:
- Openings made for waste pipes, soil pipes, washing machines.
- Openings made for electric and telephone cables, and central heating pipes.
- Openings made for underfloor ventilation.
- The gap between the bottom of an external door and the threshold.
- Defective drains and manholes. As a householder you are requested to do your part.
So keep an eye out for gaps where pipes enter your building; scratching or droppings at gaps; rodent droppings; bins being disturbed. These are all signs of rodent activity.

HOW WE CAN HELP
EPC can provide a free survey of your premises to ascertain if these key elements are available and possibly causing any infestation you may have. One of the objectives of the survey is to identify where the rodents might be feeding, drinking and finding shelter, as well as the routes they were taking to exploit the environment.
We can then suggest an effective Rodent Control programme that will seek firstly to identify those aspects of the environment that are critical in controlling the problem. The programme will then also identify how and where to modify the availability of food, water and shelter, both to assist in control and longer term to ensure that the infestation does not re-establish after control is complete.
